About Gelato

Also known as Larry Bird, the Gelato strain is an evenly balanced hybrid strain made by crossing Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. This ice cream-themed cannabis strain is the best of both worlds. In true hybrid nature, it brings out the most popular properties of both, indica and sativa.

Gelato Strain Effects

Although it is a well-balanced hybrid, Gelato leans slightly towards indica—55% indica and 45% sativa, to be more specific. With a balanced and laid back high, this is a great strain for social use. You’ll feel relaxed and uplifted but talkative and comfortable with your surroundings.

Users of the Gelato strain report feeling:

  • Sedated
  • Creative
  • Euphoric
  • Aroused
  • Happy

Gelato is known to set in quick—sometimes making effect even before users have had a chance to exhale! Its most notable effect is a sense of altered perception, which makes smokers adapt to their newly intensified surroundings. This head high is met by a body buzz that, although discouraging physical activity, does not leave users completely couch locked.

Many describe Gelato as having amplified psychedelic effects, such as time dilation and sound sensitivity. With this strain, you’ll feel floaty and comfortable but still lucid, making it a great strain for both, daytime and evening use.

Gelato, like most of its sibling strains, does have some downfalls, such as dry mouth, dry eyes, and paranoia. Although the two first effects are fairly common, paranoia and anxiety are somewhat rare; users prone to cannabis-induced anxiety should tread lightly with this strain, but because of its lack of intense cerebral effects, regular smokers should not worry about ending up in a deeply paranoid mindset.

Gelato Strain Benefits

Apart from its aforementioned effects, Gelato also has some added value for medical cannabis users. Patients seeking for relief from a plethora of ailments seek the strain, including those suffering with:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Migraines/headaches
  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of appetite

Its powerful numbing effects come into play when it comes to helping aches and pains, and the strain’s mood enhancement can offer temporary relief from the symptoms associated with some mental illnesses.

Gelato Strain Flavor – The Genetics & Terpenes

Made from a mystical mix of Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, Gelato is associated with sweet, vanilla-like, citrussy, and minty flavors and aromas. In essence, Gelato combines the smooth appeal of Sunset Sherbet with the earthy and minty goodness of Thin Mints.

Some dominant terpenes in this strain include:

  • Caryophyllene
  • Myrcene
  • Limonene
  • Humulene

These create the perfect sweet and earthy aroma associated with the strain. Apart from taste, Gelato is visually stunning. Forest green leaves are adorned by bright orange pistils and accented by deep purple shades. Although sticky and short, the strain is less frosty in appearance than many others.

Gelato usually boasts THC levels of around 17% but can go as high as 25%. Its CBD contents, on the other hand, are extremely low—oftentimes close to 0% and rarely ever reaching 1%. Despite its lack of CBD, a compound studied and loved for its wellness benefits, the strain’s high THC concentration makes it ideal for those seeking pain relief and stress management.

Similar Strains Available

Leaning towards indica but still a powerful hybrid, Gelato shares its seat as a cannabis giant with several other strains. These offer the same relaxing, sociable properties and similar levels of THC.

Among the most obvious similar strains to Gelato is Girl Scout Cookies. Gelato is, after all is made with Thin Mints—a cross of the legendary GSC. In some ways, Girl Scout Cookies could be considered Gelato’s grandparent. The strain also offers the relaxed, happy, euphoric effects brought forth by Gelato and they both contain similar levels of THC and CBD.

Strawnana, short for Strawberry Banana, is another indica-leaning hybrid similar to Gelato. Its effects are happy and relaxing, and its flavor is also sweet and fruity. It is, however, much more indica-dominant than Gelato, and contains slightly higher THC levels.

Information Regarding Growing Gelato

Gelato isn’t the easiest weed strain to grow, but that doesn’t mean it’s flat-out impossible. Due to its diverse genes, the strain is fairly resistant to pests, and there’s enough space between the branches and plant forms, so trimming is also rarely necessary.

Here’s where the difficulty comes in. Gelato plants are very sensitive to temperature and humidity levels, which is where growers must pay attention. Gelato thrives in a hot, humid Mediterranean-like climate, so if you live in an area prone to steep seasonal changes, your best bet is growing the strain indoors.

It takes between 55 and 65 days for Gelato crops to flower indoors (September to mid-October for outdoor growers). Even though somewhat difficult to grow, Gelato provides generous yields that generate big buds rich in THC.

A main challenge of growing Gelato is finding seeds or clones. For a long time, Gelato seeds were not commercially available, meaning growers would need to obtain trimmings in order to cultivate clones. Although it’s relatively easier to obtain them now, this aspect may still prove a challenge for some growers.

The strain’s odor also makes itself known during the growing process, meaning indoor growers should definitely put odor control measures in place.

Summary

The Gelato strain offers the best of both worlds: you’ll be feeling relaxed, happy, and euphoric without necessarily being glued to the couch. Sure, it may not be ideal to run a marathon or redo your garage, but it’s still perfect to hang out with friends or enhance any movie experience.

With Gelato, you’ll get all the sweetness of your favorite dessert without worrying about cavities!
